"Safe Surrender" Clears Over 200 Warrants

As a part of the "Safe Surrender" program in Washington D.C., over 200 individuals that had outstanding warrants surrendered in the first of the programs three weekend events that are scheduled for this month. Prior to the first event that began on August 13, 41 people voluntarily turned themselves in to authorities at the courthouse.

The "Safe Surrender" program is a part of efforts to reduce the amount of outstanding warrants for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies in Washington and to give any fugitives in the city a safe place to surrender. Out of the 267 warrants that were cleared last week, around 98 percent went home on the same day they surrendered according to Leah Gurowitz, a court spokeswoman.

When an individual surrenders, a volunteer will determine whether or not that person actually has an outstanding warrant. If a warrant is found, an attorney is then appointed to represent them. Attorneys from both the Criminal Justice Act panel and the D.C. Public Defender's Office are on-site at the courthouse to represent anyone that wishes to surrender.

During the last event in 2007, 530 individuals who had outstanding warrants surrendered voluntarily. Although the remaining two events are not scheduled until August 20 and 27, individuals can safely surrender any time of the year at the criminal division of the Superior Court. While the program allows individuals to clear up legal offenses, it also helps to greatly reduce the number of warrants that law enforcement agencies have to deal with.
